Cook County is located along the north shore of Lake Superior and is a great place to explore the great outdoors. Visit one of several State Parks located along highway 61. Each state park is unique in its own way.
Grand Portage State Park is home to the highest waterfall in the entire state of Minnesota.
Judge C. Magney State Park is home to the mysterious Devil’s Kettle waterfall.
Cascade River State Park features multiple waterfalls and cascades for you to enjoy along the Cascade River. Another feature of this state park is the panoramic view of Lake Superior and the Cascade River valley from the top of Lookout Mountain.
Temperance River State Park is home to the Temperance River, where the river cuts through massive rock gorges with trails along both sides of the river. The state parks offer a variety of outdoor activities including hiking, viewing waterfalls, camping, geocaching, fishing, skiing, and more.
Make sure to stop in at Grand Marais, awarded the “Coolest Small Town In America” in 2015. Take a scenic drive up the Gunflint Trail, a 57-mile wilderness road that begins in Grand Marais and ends in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCAW). Watch for wildlife along the way especially moose, with Cook County being one of the better places to see moose in the entire state of Minnesota. Enjoy the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCAW), with access points along the Gunflint Trail. The BWCAW is a massive wilderness area where people go to get away on vacation. The BWCAW offers a variety of outdoor activities including hiking, wildlife viewing including moose, wilderness camping, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and more. These are just a few highlights for Cook County with so much more to offer.
