3. Cross River Heritage Center

The Cross River Heritage Center is a historic museum located along highway 61 near the Cross River in Schroeder. This museum was originally built in 1929 and has been home to The Stickney Inn, a general store, a post office, a boarding house, a gas station and a meat market. The museum provides history of the area including the native people, forgotten towns and resorts, logging and fishing, shipwrecks, Cross River Falls, and Father Baraga’s Cross. The museum has 3 floors of displays that showcase the history and culture of the area here on the north shore. There is also a gift shop located within the Museum. Free admission with donations accepted. The museum is open in the summer from May through October, Tuesday thru Sunday and closed on Mondays.

1. Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center

From Grand Marais, take the Gunflint Trail (County Road 12) to Moose Pond Road (County Road 81). Watch for the “Chik-Wauk Museum & Nature Center” sign on the right side of the road. Discover the Chik-Wauk Museum, also known as the historic Chik-Wauk Lodge and Resort on Saganaga Lake. The Chik-Wauk Museum & Nature Center is located on the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The Chik-Wauk Museum offers unique history of the area as well as interpretive displays to help you learn more about the area and the culture. There are also informational displays to help you learn about the wild animals and their natural habitats. Another building located near the Chik-Wauk Museum provides interactive learning with programs to help identify wild flowers, trees, birds, animals, and more.
