1. Chippewa Church

St. Francis Xavier Church is a historic church also known as the “Chippewa City Church”. The Church is located about 1 mile east of Grand Marais along highway 61. St. Francis Xavier Church was built in 1895 and served as the only Catholic Church in Grand Marais from 1895-1916 until St. John’s Catholic Church was built. The final mass for St. Francis Xavier Church was on Christmas in 1936. This Church is the last remaining building in “Chippewa City” with the original log structure visible on the interior. The Church was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. During the summer, the church is open for tours on Sundays for a couple hours. Check with St. John’s Catholic Church or the Visitor’s Center for more information.
